Intermec is rolling out an imaging technology suite for Australian transport and logistics.

Powered by Intermec’s eMDI and VERDEX software, the imaging suite automates address and identity verification. Intermec’s eMDI provides mobile workers a way to capture and convert paper documents in the field, into electronic files, simplifying many aspects of the delivery receiving and billing processes. The company’s VERDEX is an optical character recognition (OCR) engine executed both on mobile devices and desktops that integrates OCR form reading into a business process. Both applications utilise Intermec’s EA30 imager, which is said to provide 50 times more motion tolerance than standard 2D imagers.

The rollout of Intermec’s imaging technology means that tasks undertaken by field workers, which were completed in coordination with head office, can now be completed quickly, accurately and independently. Functions that will benefit from the imaging technologies include:

Remote deposit capture (RDC): RDC is a simple, easy and efficient way to process cheque payments. It is a secure, end-to-end solution that enables remote deposit from a customer location at the time of payment. This accelerates the processing of payment transactions from days to minutes and also eliminates paper processing at the point of payment, removing the possibility of lost or damaged cheques.

Mobile document imaging: With Mobile Document Imaging and an Intermec mobile computer, drivers can easily capture documents without additional equipment, services or delays. Early availability of shipment data means transporters can plan ahead to optimise loads, routes and schedules.

Shipment address verification (SAV): SAV streamlines delivery operations by expediting address lookup, verification and correction in both mobile and desktop environments. Based on intelligent scanning technology, SAV reduces the number of undeliverable items by correcting errors before they are entered into the system.

Identity verification: Identity verification extracts key information from identity documents such as driver license, passport, student and corporate ID card. Upon capturing the identity document, key information can be extracted using optical character recognition technology and used to populate any electronic mobile application form.

Credit Card Capture (CCC): Credit Card Capture (CCC) enables customer-facing mobile workers to accept credit cards as a form of payment without the need for a traditional mag-stripe reader. CCC leverages the integrated imager in the mobile computers to optically extract card data and forward it to an approval system quickly and securely in either real-time or batch mode.
